
Can a heater swap actually get you more bottles?
If you’re running a mid-tier or older blow molding machine, you’ve probably hit that wall. You know the one. You want more bottles per hour, but your oven just can’t get the preforms up to temperature fast enough. It’s frustrating. The good news? You don’t necessarily need a brand-new machine. Sometimes, just swapping out your infrared heating elements is the fastest way to move the needle.
Let’s talk about heat density
If you want to shave seconds off your cycle time, you need more heat hitting the plastic, and you need it fast. We build these KRONES-compatible lamps to push concentrated short-wave radiation. By moving to a higher wattage, you’re basically flooding the PET wall with more energy. This means the preform hits its glass transition temperature much quicker and over a shorter distance. **One quick warning, though.**Check your power supply first. If you toss high-wattage tubes into a system with thin wiring or a tired transformer, you’re going to trip breakers or fry your contactors. Not a fun way to spend a Tuesday.
The nitty-gritty: Quartz and coatings
We use heavy-wall quartz glass because, frankly, thin glass snaps when things get hot. We also add internal halogen gas to stop the filament from evaporating too fast. It just makes the lamps last longer. Some of our units have a special coating that shifts the infrared spectrum. Instead of just scorching the surface of the plastic, the heat actually sinks deeper into the thick base of the preform. And don’t worry about the installation. We use standard R7s or Sk15 connectors. They just slide right in. No rewiring the oven housing, no headaches.
The catch: You’ve got to cool it down
Here’s the thing: more heat in the oven means more heat soaking into the machine frame. If you upgrade to high-output lamps, your cooling fans and vents have to keep up. If the inside of the oven gets too hot, you’ll start seeing “pearling” defects or weird, inconsistent wall thickness in your bottles. It’s all a balancing act. Crank up the heat, but make sure your airflow is ready for it. Keep that stable, and you’re golden.
